A Short Bar Has a Name

A chart’s scale changes what we notice.

A short bar can look like nothing. Put very different quantities on one axis and the smaller series hugs the floor. The data remains; attention has already moved past it.

Labeling that bar, or offering a view that reveals its differences, does not argue for a small number. It lets a reader see before judging. A chart should help comparison, not quietly remove one side before it begins.
