A Queue Is Not a Subtraction Problem
Arrivals minus departures do not always describe the work left.
A queue invites a premature equation: created minus merged equals remaining. That holds only when the window, objects and initial state align. Otherwise it mixes yesterday’s waiting with today’s arrivals.
The distribution of waiting time is often more revealing than queue length. Ten recent arrivals and a queue of ten with one long-stalled item call for different responses. A system’s rhythm lives in age as well as quantity.
